Since as far back as I can remember I have been captivated by animals and the wild. This is why I am passionate about wildlife conservation and I am a lifelong supporter of people and organizations who are working in the field to help animals in crisis. It is what drives me and why I became an artist.

To paint Princess has been my honor and my privilege. She is such an incredible ambassador for her species, and for me it was an opportunity to portray her innocence and her sweetness.

Princess is a little over 30 years old now, living free, deep in the rainforests of Borneo. When she was just a youngster, her family was killed by poachers and she was rescued from wildlife trafficking and  raised in an orangutan sanctuary in Borneo. She learned American sign language from Dr. Gary Shapiro, who was in Borneo at the time studying orangutans and their ecosystems.

Princess is the adopted daughter of Dr. Gary Shapiro and is one of the only orangutans to ever be taught to communicate in American Sign Language.

I painted her portrait as a tribute to her and Dr. Gary Shapiro.
