On the night of New Years Eve 2019, a visitor to the Krefield Zoo in Germany lit a candle lantern, illegally launching it into the air. It landed on the Zoo's out-dated Ape House. Home to over 75 chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas, gibbons and monkeys. There were no sprinklers, no alarms. No one heard the desperate cries for help and by the morning, their home had turned into a raging inferno, eliminating any chance of escape. Charley, a gentle member of his Chimpanzee family, tragically lost his life in this fire. My portrait is my way of paying tribute to him and all his captive friends who lost their lives that day.

50% of the proceeds from the sale of his portrait are being donated to the Liberia Chimpanzee Sanctuary, home to over 80 orphaned chimpanzees rescued from wildlife trafficking and poaching in West Africa.
